Abstract

The use of various forms of restraint and control in psychiatric treatment centers has increasingly come under critical scrutiny as the rights of patients have become a legal issue. This paper examines one form of restraint, seclusion, in a children's psychiatric hospital, analyzing characteristics of frequently secluded children. Specifically, age and development were found significant factors; younger children, and children with below average IQ scores were at greater risk for seclusion.
