Abstract

Mullite ceramics containing zirconia were rapidly solidified (RS) to obtain amorphous powder using Plasma Centrifugal Atomization. The morphology, thermal properties and mechanical properties of individual RS amorphous (RS A) powder particles were investigated. The mechanical and thermal properties of RS crystallized (RS C) powder particles were studied for comparison. The hardness of RS C powder appeared to be independent of zirconia content, unlike the fracture toughness, which increased with zirconia content. The fracture toughness of RS A powder was higher than that of RS C powder. The RS A powder exhibited a strong exothermic peak in DTA and a high degree of shrinkage in a dilatometric examination. The results obtained in this investigation are discussed in terms of the ultrafine microstructure exhibited by the RS A powder.
