Abstract

Characteristics of a new SQUID using three Josephson junctions (3J-SQUID) are compared with those of conventional dc SQUID. It is shown that SQUID characteristics, such as transfer function and magnetic flux noise in the white noise region, degrade rapidly with inductance in the conventional case. This rapid degradation is caused by the thermal noise at T=77K, and can be prevented in the case of 3J-SQUID. Therefore, 3J-SQUID is useful to improve the characteristics in the case of large inductances.
