Abstract
A well growing methane oxidizing bacterium was isolated in pure culture from a natural source through studying production of single cell protein. This bacterium was identified as a new species Methylomonas flagellata. It was shown to be a gram-negative rod, 1.0 to 1.2 by 2.0 to 3.0 μ, and motile by means of polar flagella. Formation of a type of “immature cysts” was observed. This bacterium showed relatively high growth rate of μ=0.17 hr−1 for a pure methane oxidizing bacterium.
