Abstract

A tissue culture assay was used to investigate the induction of gall tissue in Gypsophila paniculata by Erwinia herbicola pv. gypsophilae. The induction and development of the gall tissue was compared with tumor induction by Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Hyperplastic tissues derived from infections by E. herbicola pv. gypsophilae and by A. tumefaciens were cured of bacteria using the antibiotic cefotaxime, and the characteristics of the cured hyperplasias were compared. Growth of E. herbicola pv. gypsophilae-induced hyperplastic tissue was found to be dependent on the presence of kinetin and 2–4,D (synthetic auxin) in the culture medium, in contrast to the phytohormone-independent growth of A. tumefaciens-transformed tissue. The possible role of phytohormone production in gall induction by E. herbicola pv. gypsophilae is discussed.
