Abstract

<p indent=0mm>Since the beginning of the construction of the Golmud to Lhasa section of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, sand damage has been a serious problem that cannot be ignored because it threatens the normal operation of the railway. Thus, alpine blown sand activity and its prevention and control must be studied urgently. Through continuous, systematic research on the blown sand environment and sand control engineering of the Golmud to Lhasa section of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway in recent years, we analyzed the characteristics of the blown sand hazards, proposed prevention and control concepts and a protection system configuration, and analyzed the protection benefits after the project was implemented. In this paper, the characteristics of a blown sand disaster and its prevention and control are summarized systematically, which fills the research gaps in terms of blown sand hazards in high altitude and cold regions, and provides a scientific basis and technical support for the prevention and control of blown sand hazards of railway projects in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and similar regions.
