Abstract

The process of weathering rocks in tropical regions like Indonesia is a challenge in engineering geology because in the tropics weathering on a rock it will be faster due to dense vegetation, climate, and high rainfall. In engineering geology, the weathering process becomes a very important issue especially in the field of slope stability due to the rock weathering process often produce a unique/typical design and building structure. The weathering process generally changes the engineering properties of rock so that it reduces rock carrying capacity. This study discusses the characteristics of breccia andesite by field observation including measurement of the about characteristics of discontinuities such as spacing, roughness, aperture, and fill material, and effect of the weathering degree to its engineering characteristic in the laboratory. Rock sampling is based on classification [1] and some field parameters such as discoloration and rock strength. The results show that andesite breccia rocks have six degrees of weathering, the influence of weathering degree on the index properties of rock has a positive relation to porosity and water content and has a negative relation to dry density, wet density, natural density, specific gravity, and rock strength.
