Abstract

The preliminary study of the reverse micelles system with addition of TWEEN 85 into AOT-isooctane for Amoxicillin extraction was conducted to investigate the behaviour of the mixed micelles mixtures. It was found that the presence of non-ionic surfactant in AOT-iso-octane mixtures could enhance the solubilisation of antibiotic in the organic phase and it shows a better performance rather than the usage of a single surfactant. The standard Gibbs energy of surface adsorption Δad o G, is identified as -78.21 kJ/mole and the amount of standard Gibbs free energy of micelle formation Δmic 0 G is -5.514 kJ/mole. The critical micelle concentration of mixed reverse micelles was decreased drastically when TWEEN 85 is combined with AOT-iso-octane solution and this indicates that the amount of surfactant required to form micelle is extremely low and it is more economic as compared to the usage of AOT and TWEEN 85 alone.
