Abstract

Previous attempts to render the sinkage equation for dimensionless flat plates were plausible only either in sand or in clay. A descriptive equation has been derived by considering three-dimensional probes and defining their dimensions at an arbitrarily chosen sinkage. This generalized equation demonstrates not only that two-dimensional theories are inadequate (conspicuously in accounting for the effect of wheel width) but also that a fundamental characteristics soil length is lacking.
