Abstract

The annual averages (1986–1995) of SO2 and sulphate are analysed for the most important EMEP stations in Europe. The objective is to discover the different temporal patterns for these pollutants. To do this a cluster analysis is developed. Four clusters are obtained for both pollutants. In general, a decreasing trend is observed in the temporal patterns. Four clusters are obtained in the analysis done for both pollutants. It can be observed a clear decreasing trend if a grand mean is considered for all stations. For both pollutants the cluster majority is defined by low concentrations from 1986 to 1995 with a decreasing trend signficant at a 0.05 level.
