Abstract

Purpose: Osteoarthritis (OA), the main osteoarticular disease is characterized by cartilage breakdown, synovial inflammation, osteophytes production, and subchondral bone remodeling. While OA is one of the most common rheumatic disorders, no efficient disease-modifying drugs still exist today. Ageing, a complex physiological process, consists of a gradual decline in certain functions, coordination, loss of homeostasis and physiological integrity, is a major risk factor for OA. Like in ageing, an accumulation of senescent cells is observed within the OA joint, and elimination of senescent cells has been shown to reduce pain and increase cartilage development in murine post-traumatic OA.
