Abstract

In the last decade FePt nanoparticles gained a lot of interest due to their potential use in ultra-high density storage media. In the article by C. Schmitz-Antoniak (pp. 1298–1304), the X-ray absorption spectroscopy is presented as a powerful tool to characterise the properties of ensembles of FePt nanoparticles. In particular, spin and orbital magnetic moments obtained from the X-ray magnetic circular dichroism are correlated to crystallographic structure and local composition investigated by the analysis of the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). The image on the cover shows on the vertical axis the magnitude of the wavelet transform of EXAFS oscillations obtained at the Pt L3 absorption edge of 6 nm FePt nanoparticles in the as-prepared state, i.e. including oxygen and carbon contaminations. It is shown as a function of photoelectron wave number and radial distance. The peaks at different positions can be assigned to different elements.
