Abstract
Background: Obesity is proposed to be associated with an increased susceptibility to the development of cardiac disease based on adaptive structural and functional changes in the heart. We hypothesise the end result of obesity-associated changes in myocardial structure and function may vary at distinct stages of weight gain, with many of these changes possible precursors to more overt forms of cardiac dysfunction and heart failure. Hence, the aim of this study was to characterise changes in cardiac structure and function based on weight.
