Abstract

The utilisation of surface coatings to mediate surface properties is of wide practical significance, especially in biomedical applications such as implant deployment. However, of even greater significance is the capability to characterise these coatings by appropriate techniques. This chapter introduces some of the popular techniques currently used in analysis of the surface and bulk properties of biomaterial coatings, including spectroscopic, microscopy and surface energy techniques.
