• Modern so-called metallised fibres required physicochemical forensic research. • The bright-field microscopy and SEM-EDX of high discriminatory value. • Very little metal was found, with aluminium in only a quarter of the samples. • All so-called metallised fibres made of poly(ethylene terephthalate) • Great variation in examined fibres beneficial for forensic science community.
