Abstract

<p class="p2">This research aims to study the phenomenon of character education through the <em>Materuna Nyoman </em>Ceremony in Tenganan Pegringsingan Village, Karangasem Regency, Bali Province. This research was conducted using a qualitative approach and found results, such as (1) the <em>Materuna Nyoman </em>ceremony is a ceremony that must be followed by every youth in Tenganan Pegringsingan Village as a requirement of being recognized as an adult; (2) through the <em>Materuna Nyoman </em>Ceremony, religious characters, patience, care for the environment, social care, responsibility, independence, and self-sacrifice can be formed; and (3) the participation of <em>teruna </em>in the <em>Materuna Nyoman </em>Ceremony has implications for increasing the <em>teruna’s </em>knowledge of ethics, responsibility, social care, environmental care, and so on. The development of positive knowledge evidently also has implications for the formation of good attitudes, and ultimately leads to the development of good behavior for <em>teruna </em>who have participated in the <em>Materuna Nyoman </em>Ceremony.</p>

Introduction

A challenge that is very influential in the world of education in the global era is the modern lifestyle that tends to be materialistic and individual, so the education world is needed to teach intellectuals and to shape the character of students. Character education can be done through culture, as has been done by the people of Tenganan Pegringsingan Village. For the people of Tenganan Pegringsingan Village who until now still maintain tradition, character education based on local wisdom for teenagers is very necessary, because on the shoulders of teenagers the hope of cultural preservation is placed. Educating the character of the teruna has been carried out by the people of Tenganan Pegringsingan Village from generation to generation through the "Materuna Nyoman Ceremony" as a condition to be recognized as adults and allowed to marry. The community believes that through the Materuna Nyoman Ceremony the character of the teruna can be formed so they grow into human characters, and in the end they are able to maintain the tradition that grows and develops in Tenganan Pegringsingan Village
