Abstract

The human mouth has an astonishingly diverse microbiome exceeding 700 cultivable species. The most common non-communicable oral diseases including dental caries and periodontal diseases originate from imbalances in oral microbial equilibrium in underlying susceptible hosts. The role of oral biofilms in initiation and progression of these diseases is well recognized. Strategies to target pathogenic potential of oral biofilms are among the leading preventive measures to combat infectious oral diseases. Probiotics have shown promising results in their ability to integrate in oral biofilms, suppress common oral pathogens and modulate the immune response at a local level. The present chapter outlines the current evidence on the role of probiotic species in prevention and possible treatment of caries, periodontal diseases, and oral candidiasis.
