Abstract

Ionic liquids are organic salts that are liquid at ambient temperature. Ionic liquids have been established as one of the greenest and environmental sustainable alternatives to be used for different biological and industrial applications. Ionic liquids are connected with numerous beneficial properties including high thermal and chemical stability, negligible vapor pressure, high solubility in polar and nonpolar media, etc., which make them ideal candidates for various applications. In the last two decades, corrosion inhibition potential of ionic liquids has been investigated extensively. Different series of ionic liquids such pyridinium, tetra-ammonium, imidazolium and phosphonium based ionic liquids are extensively used as corrosion inhibitors for various metals and alloys in various electrolytes. Among the various employed ionic liquids, imidazolium-based ionic liquids are used most extensively. Most of the ionic liquids inhibit metal corrosion by adsorbing on the metal surface following through Langmuir adsorption isotherm. These compounds mainly behave as mixed-type corrosion inhibitors. The present chapter describes the advantages and disadvantages of ionic liquids used as corrosion inhibitors along with the various aspects of corrosion and its mitigation.
