Abstract

This chapter discusses the importance of acceptance tests and calibration in medical imaging. When a new X-ray set or telecurie gamma-ray beam unit is installed, there are a number of tests that have to be carried out on it before it is put into any kind of service. Subsequently, there are a whole range of measurements that have to be made to establish its radiation characteristics for treatment purposes, and finally there are tests and measurements that are carried out periodically and regularly to ensure that the working of the machine remains constant. Not all these tests and measurements will be carried out by the same person but all are concerned with the safety of the staff and patients, and with the accuracy of treatment, so that they are very much the concern of the radiographer and radiologist.
