Abstract
This chapter presents an account of measurement of the coefficient of secondary electron emission of copper, cupalloy, and beryllium bronze under vacuum conditions typically produced by demountable electro-vacuum assemblies with oil diffusion pumps and rubber seals. It discusses the effect of electron and ion bombardment and of a number of chemical and mechanical treatments of the surface on the secondary emission. The dependence of the coefficient of secondary electron emission (CSEE) on the angle of incidences becomes more marked as the energy of incident electrons increases, is associated with the roughness of the surface. At low energies of primary electrons, the emission of secondary electrons takes place from a depth commensurate with the dimensions of the relief of the surface. Under these conditions, the CSEE value to be measured appears to be averaged over various angles of incidence for different parts of the surface. The CSEE was also measured for targets made of cupalloy and beryllium bronze.
