Abstract

Along with the international organizations, several national organizations in different countries are also playing important role in the promotion of IOD activities. Some of these organizations promote IOD activities by taking direct measures, while some others do so indirectly by providing funds, or by training required manpower or by evolving tools and standards, and some others take both direct and indirect measures for doing so. Notable among the international agencies promoting IOD activities are different UN agencies, such as FAO, UNESCO, UNIDO, UNEP, ESCAP, and WHO; World Bank; European Commission; and IDRC. Besides, international professional organizations like FID and IFLA have also played important role. Notable among the national agencies, involved in promotion of IOD activities are CILIP (UK), ASLIB (UK), ALA (USA), SLA (USA), ASIS&T (USA), National Commission on Libraries and Information Science (NCLIS, USA), and Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR, USA). Besides, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation of USA also work in this field not only in the United States but in many other countries. Some other notable national organizations working or have worked in this field are UGC (India), National Knowledge Commission (NKC, India), National Mission on Libraries (NML, India), DRTC (India), Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation (RRRLF, India), Indian Library Association (ILA, India), and Indian Association of Special Libraries and Information Centres (IASLIC, India). Activities of all these organizations have been highlighted in this chapter.
