Abstract
Don Alonso de Cartagena (13841456) had represented John II of Castile at the Council and has left a written account of his defence of Castiles right to precedence over England. Santiagos mission to Spain was believed by some to be part of Gods divine plan. The notion of Divine Providence was a contentious issue in the early seventeenth century. De la Puentes geographical argument for Spains pre-eminence is based on a quotation from Isaiah, which he claims proves Spanish superiority over other nations. An exhibition held in Santiago de Compostela in 2004 was called Santiago and the Spanish Monarchy (15041788). The attitude of the monarchy towards Santiago was ambivalent, particularly from the time of Ferdinand and Isabella. The personal devotion of the monarchs to Santiago allied to his political representation was expressed in their sacrophagi in the Capilla Real of Granada. Keywords: Don Alonso de Cartagena; England; Granada; Santiago; Spanish monarchy
