Abstract

This chapter discusses the control of machine tools. Control of machine tools involves: (1) the applying of power, (2) the guiding or limiting of the movement of the tool or work, (3) the selection of the rate of movement of the tool and/or work, and (4) the selection of manufacturing facilities, the clamping of work or tool, and so on. There are different levels of control of machine tools, ranging from fully manual to fully automatic control. The chapter also discusses the first level of control. With the introduction of the water wheel, then the steam engine, and later the electric motor to drive machine tools, the on/off control of power was obtained through the use of clutches or switches. The on/off application of power is designated the first level of control.
