Abstract
Various facets of Japanese society are grappling with the question of how skills and know-how, as inherited from early modern times and as newly developed in the post-war high economic growth period, are now to be passed on to the next generations. This chapter argues that the transmission of customs and etiquette in modern and contemporary Japanese society consists of three waves namely alpha, beta and gamma waves. In terms of the three-way dichotomy, the first corresponds to the Alpha Wave, created and preserved in folk traditions, the second to the Beta-Gamma-Wave technology, born of the merger of modern elite culture and contemporary mass culture.
