Chapter Twenty Four: On The Emphatic And The Permutative Elements

Abstract

The emphatic behaves like the attribute in one aspect, namely, that a masculine noun is emphasized by a masculine noun, a feminine noun by a feminine noun, a singular by a singular, and a plural by a plural. The communicative intention is realised without the emphatic element and it is only added in order to forestall something that may occur to the hearer. The form of the emphatic element can be of two types. The first type is when it repeats the exact form (of the emphasized) noun or verb. The second type is when (the emphatic) does not have the form of the first word but is identical with it in meaning. As for the permutative, it is analogous to the particularisation of a general expression by an exceptive phrase, as in יעשה בהם אך אשר יאכל לכל נפש כל מלאכה לא.Keywords: emphatic element; exceptive phrase; feminine noun; masculine noun; permutative element
