Abstract

This chapter deals with the recent research conducted on the application and use of ionic liquids and ionic liquid crystals for electrochemical sensing. The first part covers a brief introduction on the structure and types of ionic liquids. The structure-properties relation of ionic liquids is presented to justify the diverse applications of this class of materials. The ionic liquid at the interface is crucial to the interaction of these compounds with solid substrates as well the diverse methods of their applications as surface modifiers. The research conducted for the last decade using ionic liquids in electrochemical sensing of pharmaceutical, biological and several organic compounds is discussed and examples are given for their use as effective components in sensors’ fabrication.
