Abstract

Pyrolysis and gasification of food waste has been identified as a potential emerging waste-to-energy technology. This chapter presented an overview on pyrolysis and gasification of food waste. The characteristics of various pyrolysis and gasification reactors and the parameters such as moisture content, temperature, and copyrolysis are summarized in this chapter. The characteristics and utilization of gas, liquid, and biochar produced during pyrolysis and gasification are discussed. The main factors that affect the pyrolysis and gasification of food waste are the proportion of various materials, the pyrolysis and gasification temperatures, the type of reactor, and the operating parameters. Furthermore, improvements in pyrolysis and gasification of food waste are proposed. To improve resource recovery, it is necessary to optimize the control parameters, increase the reaction rate, promote the high value of the target product, inhibit the formation of other products and pollutants, and investigate the mechanism of the operation parameters so as to produce more useful products toward zero discharge in the further study.
