Abstract

This chapter encounters writers of the generation yearning for the hometown, namely, Su Tong, Wang Shuo, and Wang Anyi. Su Tong?s Maple Village series deals with displacement between the country and the city. His nostalgia has created a southern aura of decadence against the political agenda of modernization. The chapter first examines the aesthetics of nostalgia in Wang?s novella that acknowledges the falsehood of memory in historical testimony, and the meaning of homesickness for one who is homeless. Then, the literary work is compared with the film reproduction, including the movie script and the motion picture. The chapter also demonstrates that, for the late and postrevolutionary generations, the problem of constructing the self lies not so much in a loss of innocence as a lack of experience in history. Keywords: Maple village; rootless homesickness; southern decadence; Su Tong; Wang Anyi; Wang Shuo
