Abstract

There is a reference to apostasy (irtidad ) in Article 26 of the 1986 Press Code of Iran, which in fact addresses sabb. Inheriting from the era of colonialism, Pakistan has embodied its blasphemy law in Articles 298A, 295B and 295C of its Penal Code. Unlike Iran, these articles have provided a long list of instances of sabb or other insulting offences. Article 298-A is concerned with insulting holy persons other than the Prophet Muhammad. The blasphemy law of Pakistan has been a subject of wide criticism inside and outside the country as stated by Abdelfattah Amor in his report. The most controversial case of apostasy in the recent century is the one of a Muslim British novelist, Salman Rushdie, and his novel the Satanic Verses, which was published in 1988.Keywords: Abdelfattah Amor; apostasy; blasphemy law; Iran; Pakistan; Penal Code; Press Code; sabb; Salman Rushdie
