Abstract
Chen Jiru was active in the printing and publishing industries throughout his life. This chapter emphasizes his role in the production of texts. The Ming dynasty in general, and the late-Ming period in particular, witnessed changes in the production of texts, structure of the industry, and the number and type of readers. The chapter presents discussion of Chen's involvement in printing and publishing the range of his works. There are two immediate difficulties in trying to ascertain the genesis and development of Chen's writing career. The first is the haphazard use of some characters to describe Chen's involvement in any given work. The second problem is related to the demarcation between public and private writing. In his final decade Chen produced three large collections of his own work.
