Abstract

This chapter demonstrates in detail what truth means in Evangelium Veritatis and in the writings of Justin Martyr. To perform the task the works of the two men are compared through a series of propositions pertaining to truth, the truth concerning God and his world, concerning Jesus Christ as the Logos of the Father, concerning the earthly life, death, and resurrection of Christ, concerning man and his appropriation of truth, and concerning the community of truth its origin, life, and destiny. The chapter summarizes the main importance which the writer of Ev. Ver finds in the teaching of Jesus. Jesus is said to instruct men concerning the incomprehensible Father, he informs them of the way of truth, and he speaks the word of gnosis. Justin's emphasis, however, tends to slight the work of God in behalf of the Christian community in between the two advents. Keywords: Christian community; Evangelium Veritatis; gnosis; Jesus Christ; Justin Martyr
