Abstract
More recently, following the jubilee year 1999, a number of articles have shed light on Peter Martyr Vermigli's exegetical method. Neither these studies nor earlier scholarship has focused, however, on his Genesis commentary. This chapter examines this most erudite and sophisticated work which was held in especially high esteem by Vermigli's contemporaries. In view of the length of the commentary, the task of examining it as a whole would seem a little daunting. The chapter deals with Vermigli's treatment of Genesis, taking up historical issues, textual, literary and rhetorical matters. It then examines the cosmogony and the anthropology, the hamartiology, and the soteriology in the account of creation, seeking throughout to unfold the hermeneutical principles of these themes as understood by Peter Martyr.
