Abstract

This chapter studies the radical revivalist groups of the Eglise Anglicane du Congo (EAC) and the way in which their belonging to the church was negotiated. Wokovu provided a dissenting voice within the church especially in the north where they were more numerous and influential than in Irumu and Nord-Kivu areas. Most wanted to operate within the same ecclesiastical space as the Anglicans, but they offered an alternative religious identity that proclaimed spiritual freedom to be paramount to liturgical and hierarchical order and that emphasised homelessness more than home. The rifts that emerged became almost too great to sustain institutional unity. Their alternative Anglican identity demonstrates the pluriform membership of the church and the importance of umoja for the EAC. The EAC provided a home for many. For a few, it provided a vehicle in which they could be homeless migrants travelling for the sake of the Gospel. 36.Keywords: Anglican identity; church; Eglise Anglicane du Congo (EAC); Gospel; homelessness; Irumu; Nord-Kivu; religious identity; revivalist groups; Wokovu
