Abstract

Now that each of the sayings of Jesus in the writings of Justin Martyr has been studied in detail with reference to the parallels in canonical Gospels and in the patristic literature, it is possible to summarize the results of this investigation and then indicate Justin's place in the development of Gospel tradition. It has been clearly shown that there is no basis whatever for position of Semisch and Zahn that Justin's deviations from the canonical Gospels is the result of failure of memory in his attempt to quote from the Gospels. There is also no evidence to support the position that Justin is dependent on one or more non-canonical Gospels. The argument of Credner and Hilgenfeld that Justin was dependent on Gospel of Peter has been undermined by the subsequent discovery of the Gospel of Peter as well as by the present investigation of sayings of Jesus. Keywords: canonical Gospels; Gospel of Peter; Hilgenfeld
