Abstract
The declaration of fisheries zones and exclusive economic zones (EEZ) by coastal States in the 1970s and 1980s resulted in the vast areas of the most lucrative fishing grounds coming under coastal State jurisdiction. This chapter focuses on a range of measures which are particularly unique to coastal States. The LOSC provides the primary legal framework for coastal State measures to combat IUU fishing. The chapter discusses the enforcement power of coastal States and its limitations. The chapter examines some specific examples of Marine Stewardship Council (MCS) tools that coastal States can employ to combat IUU fishing in their maritime zones of jurisdiction.
