Abstract

In the three decades since the diagnosis of postrraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was established, dozens of therapies have been developed for PTSD. Cognitive behavior therapies (CBT), which may be done in several different ways (such as prolonged exposure (PE)/cognitive restructuring (CR), cognitive processing therapy (CPT) and eye movement and desensitization reprocessing (EMDR); in individual, couples/family, or group therapy; with hypnosis or medication as adjunctive interventions), has the strongest scientific evidence of efficacy. Emotion regulation therapies show promise in recent rigorous studies and experiential, body-focused and psychodynamic therapies provide additional tools that may enhance PTSD recovery. While innovation is a cornerstone for the development of increasingly effective PTSD therapies, caution should be observed with popular therapies until careful scientific testing has been done.
