Abstract
This chapter examines evidence for people of African descent in the Arabian Peninsula most of which are written by European travelers. It provides a valuable source on the existence of an African Diaspora in the Arabian Peninsula. The geographical proximity of the Arabian Peninsula to Africa has resulted in movements of populations in both directions for some time. The African Diaspora that existed in the Arabian Peninsula was not exclusively a Diaspora of slave origin. Free Moslem Africans had always served as crew on board vessels in the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf. The growing recognition of the existence of an African Diaspora in the Americas and Europe has tended to attribute this Diaspora throughout the world as the product of slavery. The most enduring of the cultural attributes are shared in large areas of Africa and are shared among a wider portion of the diaspora.
