Abstract
Two of Nicholass servitors-Aleksei Olenin and Fedor Grigoryevich Solntsev-played seminal roles in the process of creating a national aesthetic. Divining the tsars vague intentions, Olenin directed Konstantin Ton to sketches executed by his own protgs, Solntsev and the architect Nikolai Efimov. The fusion of the heritage of classical art with the motifs of Russias own national traditions had been Olenins lifelong goal. Solntsev came to Olenins attention as an outstanding student and twice laureate of the Academys gold medal. Just as the codification and the publication of The Complete Collection of Laws, published by imperial command during the previous decade, brought together and made known laws issued by the Russian monarchy and thus defined a national legal tradition, the Antiquities assembled the artistic works of Russias past to make known an artistic heritage for the dynasty.Keywords: Aleksei Olenin; Antiquities; Fedor Grigoryevich Solntsev; Konstantin Ton; Nikolai Efimov; Russian national aesthetic
