Abstract
Discussions of Marx vary widely in their quality and utility. Some commentaries amount to little more than eulogies or attacks. Others disagree on his use of dialectics and science. Historical materialism (HM) took shape out of several periods of investigation, including Marx's dissertation, his and Engels's critique of Hegel's idealism and adoption of his dialectical logic, and their agreement with Feuerbach's materialism. Marx's political economy (PE) is an analysis of capitalism as a specific mode of production. His goal was to uncover the economic law of motion of modern society. The author's goal here is to elucidate Marx's methodology and thus any detailed examination of PE will only be in the context of showing how his overall epistemology. In sum, Marx rejected philosophical speculation as guesswork, metaphysical dialectics as mystifying, and demanded that scientific inquiry should clarify things rather than obscure them.Keywords: capitalism; historical materialism (HM); Marx; political economy (PE)
