Abstract

In Synoptic tradition, Jesus frequently appears in conflict with various Jewish leadership elements, primarily scribes, Pharisees, and chief priests, and, to a lesser degree, elders, Herodians, and Sadducees. The Synoptic Gospels, as is commonly recognized, do not furnish us with clear definitions of Jewish leadership groups presumed to have been active in Jesus' time. Redaction criticism, the analysis of editorial work of writers in relation to their sources, has become a dominant mode of current gospel scholarship. This book focuses on a limited dimension of Mark's Gospel his treatment of Jewish leadership groups but one does not feel it appropriate to proceed entirely along redaction critical lines. Mark's emphasis on Galilee may simply reflect historical reality that Galilee was native region of Jesus and of most of his disciples. Keywords: Galilee; Jesus; Jewish leadership; Mark; Synoptic Gospels
