Abstract

Abstract This essay comprises personal recollections, ideas, and insights, gleaned from many decades of drug discovery research and development, identifying important trends in medicinal chemistry and the pharmaceutical industry. Drawing examples from the Schering–Plough Research Institute in the latter half of the twentieth century, a panoply of techniques and a host of scientists are presented addressing the challenges of creating chemical compounds to combat disease. Drug classes considered include anti-inflammatories, antihistamines, antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, as well as anticholesterol, anticancer, and anticlotting agents.
