Abstract
In any case, hardly anything changed when, four years later, Elsevier was able to purchase Pergamon - a first-rate publishing house, the life's work of Robert Maxwell - for 440 million pounds. Pergamon was purchased long after 1980, the year we wished to end our history of these events. What comes next - the most recent past with its expansion and, not to forget, the role of the World Wide Web in the globalisation of production and electronic publishing - this is a totally different story, and a story we are not yet in a position to give an overview of; there are plenty of indications that we are currently in the midst of it.
