Abstract

The year 2009 marked the centenary of the first great Dutch 'Golden Age' painting exhibition in America, The Hudson-Fulton Celebration: Loan Exhibition of Paintings by Old Dutch Masters , at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In spite of many questionable attributions, the loan exhibition of Dutch paintings remains one of the greatest assemblages of Dutch masterpieces ever shown in America. This chapter examines the history of Dutch paintings in America leading up to this event and then examines the Hudson-Fulton exhibition and its legacy. For many of the same reasons we admire these paintings today-their simple, unpretentious subject matter, and overall high quality-fledgling collectors along the eastern seaboard were already drawn to Dutch Age pictures before the middle of the nineteenth century. The chapter presents an appendix that contains a checklist of the paintings by Dutch Masters shown at the Hudson-Fulton Celebration , with the present location. Keywords:American art museums; Dutch Golden Age; Dutch paintings; Hudson-Fulton exhibition; Metropolitan Museum of Art
