Abstract

In 1910 a leading authority on ancient Rome, Christian Huelsen, suggested that the great pyramidal temple of the Sun (figures 1a and b) described in Chapter III of the Hypnerotomachia or Dream of Poliphilus was inspired partly by the elder Pliny's description of the tomb of Mausolus and partly by the ruins of ancient Rome.
