Abstract
This chapter examines the wide area in Roman and Late Roman times at the Sanctuary of Poseidon on the Isthmus and its rural hinterland. It discusses the phenomena from the area of the eastern hinterland of Corinth and how it can contribute to our understanding of social and religious interactions in the broader region in the first few centuries CE. The chapter begins with discussion of Isthmia and examines some of the major observations that have already been made. It helps to indicate the kinds of information that Isthmia and the eastern Corinthia can provide to help us understand society, economy, and religion in the Roman period. Finally the chapter shows that the archaeological material from the Sanctuary of Poseidon at Isthmia has frequently been used by scholars of Christian Scripture to investigate social and religious trends at the time of the Pauline mission. Keywords: eastern Corinthia; Isthmia; Late Roman; Pauline mission; Roman period; Sanctuary of Poseidon
