Abstract
Diversity means that everyone permit and values a broad range of ways of being, thinking and acting. In Canada, freedom of conscience and religion guarantees that people can practice the religion of their choice and believe what they will. Both religious and sexual diversity are made complex by the argument that religion and sexuality are private matters that do not need a public face, thus permitting the hegemonies of Christianity and heterosexuality to go unchallenged. Sexual diversity is used to indicate and encompass a wide range of sexual desires, preferences and practices. For both Roman Catholicism and Protestantism, the norm has developed that sexuality is meant to be expressed only within marriage. Since most are not called to permanent chastity, heterosexual pairing for procreative purposes became the norm and the expectation.
