Abstract
Abstract The physical organic chemistry of ketenes is reviewed, with an emphasis on recent developments. Ketenes provided the first examples of cycloaddition reactions, and these have remained their most characteristic feature, especially, in dimerization and formation of β-lactams. Substituents have major effects on ketene reactivity and these have been successfully elucidated by computational methods.
