Abstract

This chapter introduces the working principles of some of the most diffused semiconductor gas sensors. The subject is treated, leaving out the mathematical relationships, on block schemes representing the steps leading from the gas concentration to the output electric signal. The separation of the different steps may allow for a better comprehension of the operative mechanisms of sensors. In particular, the block schemes allow a correct evaluation of the different contributions to the sensor sensitivity. This facilitates the comparison among different sensors and indicates where suitable optimization at either circuit or device levels could be adopted to improve the performances.
