Abstract
Celebrations on the birthdays of the gods or at the Yuanxiao festival of the first full moon of the year are marked with rituals at the village temple conducted by a range of ritual specialists. In many temples, spirit mediums are possessed by the gods. In many villages, the Yuanxiao festival is also marked by an evening lantern procession. Spirit possession often takes place as part of a ritual event, usually in the afternoon or evening. In some villages, there are regularly scheduled spirit possession sessions, either in the form of spirit writing or through direct interaction with a possessed medium. The village temples also provide a regular site for interaction with the gods on a daily basis.
