Abstract

The question of the relationship between Enochic wisdom and Jewish wisdom in general, between the book and the Jewish wisdom literature, has been put in a new perspective by the publication, in its entirety, of the Qumran wisdom literature. This chapter aims to examine the relevance of this material for the understanding of the Book of Enoch. It summarizes briefly the evidence, within 1 Enoch and in other texts, for the description of him as a scribe or wise man, and of his writings as a source of wisdom. It examines the kind of contribution the Qumran wisdom literature might make to our understanding of Enoch, and considers some of the wisdom aspects of the Book of Enoch. Finally, the author suggests that concerns with wisdom and knowledge are more deeply embedded in the Book of Watchers, and considers how it might be read in this light. Keywords: Book of Enoch; Book of Watchers; Enochic wisdom; Jewish wisdom; Qumran wisdom literature
